In a square composition, this horse image would provide a legitimate focus on the strength, dignity and beauty of the horse. When we put this powerful image into a wider composition, doubling the white space, we see another perspective. This seasoned horse, takes on a whole new posture. It becomes an image of humility and grace. It does not lose its strength, dignity or beauty, the white space simply adds humility and grace. The shift in perspective, allows us to see the deference that this all powerful horse expresses in the earth.
For me, white space represents the acknowledgment of a power greater than mine. Of the need for perspective greater than mine. It speaks, for me, of my deference to God and my intention to honour the white space. Time to reflect, to contemplate, to meditate to revere. A place of the heart, that is critical to living and breathing. It is about reflection about stepping back; about seeing our story in a larger context.
When creating this piece, folks waited for me to fill in the white space. For the first time in my life, I achieved the fine art of self-edit and the white space was preserved. This horse and I wept together, and shared the prayer of my heart that I now share with you. "Fill the picture plane of our lives with the white space of your peace, of your hope and of your love. Let the white space that surrounds our lives, tell the larger story...the story of being loved. The story of hard won humility, dignity, grace, and power. Captivate our hearts and transform our lives as we defer and learn about humility, dignity, grace and power under saddle".
